Oppo is a Chinese company that likes to make smartphones that are quite a bit nicer than what their local competitors launch, but trust me, I’ve played with several Oppo smartphones during my travels through Asia earlier this year, and they’re not anything I’d call special.
Their newest product, the Find 5, is a 5 inch 1080p phone that’s so incredibly laggy that I feel bad for anyone who buys it. And that screen, while it may sound nice on paper, has some of the worst color reproduction I’ve ever seen. According to the Chinese website Anqu, Oppo’s newest product will be a 4.5 inch 720p smartphone that’s 6.13 mm thick. That’s over 1 mm thinner than Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S4, over 1 mm thinner than the iPhone 5, and more than 0.5 mm thinner than Oppo’s previous anorexic champion, the Finder. As for the rest of the device, there’s supposed to be a quad core chip under the hood, but don’t get too excited since it’s probably from MediaTek. Now say you’re crazy enough to want this thing: When is it going to come out? Late April. How much is it going to cost? No clue. Will your local importer even bother bringing one into your country? Chances are the answer to that question is no.
